News Updates

1.ISO 9001:2008 Updates

ISO 9001:2008, Quality management system – Requirements, is the fourth edition of the standard first published in 1987 and is released by ISO in 15 Nov 2008.

ISO 9001:2008 contains no new requirements compared to the 2000 edition, which it replaces. It provides clarifications to the existing requirements of ISO 9001:2000 based on eight years’ experience of implementing the standard worldwide and introduces changes intended to improve consistency with the environmental management system standard, ISO 14001:2004.

Any remaining ISO 9001:2000 certificates will become invalid on 15 November 2010. Until then, certificates to ISO 9001:2000 will be considered equal to certificates to ISO 9001:2008.

Compared to the 2000 revision, ISO 9001:2008 represents fine-tuning, rather than a thorough overhaul. It introduces clarifications to the requirements existing in ISO 9001:2000, based on user experience over the last eight years, and changes that are intended to improve further compatibility with the ISO 14001:2004 standard for environmental management systems.

2. Deadline for OHSAS:2007 conversion

The OHSAS 18001:2007 standard, published on 1 July 2007, is more results-oriented than the earlier version.

It is better aligned with ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004.

This will further encourage Management Systems integration and possibly increase the interest in OHSAS standard.

Organizations already certified to OHSAS 18001 will have a two-year transition period, to end on 1 July 2009.

3. CapitaLand saves S$1.5 mil with Green initiatives

The initiatives were introduced as part of the group's ISO 14001 certification for environmental management system, which it obtained for its Singapore operations in 2007.

In the first 11 months of 2008, CapitaLand reduced electricity and water consumption by 4 and 5 per cent respectively for 23 properties in Singapore.

In doing so, it achieved its overall aim of reducing electricity and water consumption by 2 per cent in 2008 from 2007.

According to president and chief executive Liew Mun Leong, CapitaLand surpassed its targets by 'creating an environmentally aware mindset throughout the company and implementing various green initiatives to reduce, reuse and recycle'.

It was able to make savings by taking a holistic approach to developing and managing its projects, properties and office operations.

One of the systems it has in place is an online environmental tracking program that monitors about 150 of its properties in 60 cities worldwide.

For 2009, CapitaLand aims to cut utility consumption 3 per cent at about 150 Singapore and overseas properties, saving about $3.5 million in the process.
